Iraq to Ukraine

Many citizens of Iraq visited Ukraine during Ukrainian Soviet period to join different international training programs which existed in that time between USSR and Iraqi state. Some of those Iraqi citizens decided to stay in Ukraine after Ukrainian independence as by that time they have managed to create families with Ukrainian citizens. Development of transport connection between Turkey and Ukraine nowadays gives a big burst to the stream of Iraqi citizens traveling to Ukraine, especially in a time of political and economic instability on Iraqi land. Ukraine is considered to be a country where it’s merely possible to get refugee status, but still every year a few thousands of Iraqi citizens seek to obtain the status.

At the moment the community of Iraqi citizens in Ukraine is among the biggest Muslim communities in Ukraine on a par with Syrian community in Ukraine. Nowadays citizens of Iraq in Ukraine are mostly represented by:

• students of Ukrainian and Russian language courses and students of mostly medical and technical Ukrainian universities;
• former refuges possessing permanent residence in Ukraine after 3-year refugee status in Ukraine;
• close relative of Ukrainian citizens (husbands, wives, children, blood brothers and sisters);
• businessmen from Iraq taking part in international trading between Ukraine and Iraq, Ukraine and Turkey.

Legal issues faced by Iraqi citizens in Ukraine may be very different: from recognition of Muslim marriage in Ukraine to international trade agreement on delivery of nuts from Ukraine to Iraq. However, many counties including Ukraine consider Iraq as a state with high immigration risks, so Iraqi arriving in Ukraine and applying Ukrainian immigration programs are additionally monitored by State Migration and State border services of Ukraine. Ukrainian immigration bureau has a long practice on counseling Iraqi citizens on many legal issues in Ukraine involving family reunion immigration to Ukraine, investment immigration programs in Ukraine and all Iraqi documents paperwork.
